Uzziah developed powerful war machines, built defensive towers, and maintained a large standing army. However, his success bred pride, and he brazenly entered the temple to burn incense—a privilege reserved for priests alone. God struck him with leprosy on the spot, and he spent the rest of his life in isolation. Isaiah's prophetic career began 'in the year that King Uzziah died.'
