Son of Jotham and one of Judah’s most faithless kings, who introduced foreign idolatry and even sacrificed his own children in the fire to pagan gods. When threatened by a Syrian-Israelite alliance, Ahaz refused the sign God offered through the prophet Isaiah and instead appealed to the Assyrian king for help—a decision that made Judah a vassal state. He closed the temple, set up pagan altars throughout Jerusalem, and left his son Hezekiah a kingdom in spiritual ruin.
