Isaac

The long-awaited son of Abraham and Sarah, born miraculously when his parents were elderly. His name means ‘he laughs,’ recalling Sarah’s incredulous laughter at God’s promise. As a young man, Isaac was bound on Mount Moriah as a sacrifice before God provided a ram as substitute—a powerful foreshadowing of Christ. He married Rebekah, fathered Esau and Jacob, and passed on the covenant blessing. Isaac lived 180 years.

Where to read about Isaac

Genesis 21:1-3

Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised. And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.

The promised son arrives — and Sarah laughs again, this time with joy. But the arrival of one son means the departure of another.

Genesis 22:1-14

Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated. On the third day…

Abraham faces an impossible request. This chapter casts a long shadow over everything that follows.

Genesis 24:67

And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah and took Rebekah as his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after his mother’s death.

A servant, a prayer, a woman at a well. One of the Bible's most beautiful stories of providence unfolds in the smallest details.

Genesis 25:19-26

This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean. Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening…

Abraham dies. Isaac and Rebekah have twins who struggle before they're even born. The younger will carry the promise — and buy it for a bowl of stew.
