Son of Shelah and a significant figure in the post-flood genealogy, from whose name the term ‘Hebrew’ is traditionally derived. Eber lived 464 years and fathered Peleg, in whose days ‘the earth was divided’—likely a reference to the scattering at Babel. Through his line, the identity of the Hebrew people began to take shape, leading eventually to Abraham and the covenant nation of Israel.
