The disciples ēgnooun ('did not understand') this rhēma ('saying/matter'). It was parakekalymmenon ('veiled/hidden') from them so that mē aisthōntai ('they might not perceive it'). The divine passive suggests God concealed the full meaning until after the resurrection. They ephobounton ('were afraid') to ask further.

Language and setting

The concealment of understanding is a theological motif in Luke: revelation follows God's timetable, not human readiness. The disciples' fear of asking mirrors a pattern of avoidance when Jesus discusses suffering, reflecting their inability to reconcile messiahship with suffering.
