Luke 9:44

The Turning Point

“Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” Luke 9:44 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Luke 9:44, in plain English

Jesus said, 'Let these words really sink in: the Son of Man is about to be handed over to men.' He wanted them to truly hear what He was saying.

Why it's here

Jesus repeated this warning because He knew they were not really listening. Sometimes the truths we most need to hear are the ones we most resist. He was preparing them for what was coming.

Who's speaking

Jesus speaks urgently and personally to His disciples.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus looked at His disciples and said: please, really hear this. I am about to be betrayed. He knew they would rather celebrate than prepare, but He loved them enough to keep warning them.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Jesus commands thesthe hymeis eis ta ōta hymōn tous logous toutous ('let these words sink into your ears'), using an emphatic construction to demand deep internalization. The Son of Man mellei paradidosthai eis cheiras anthrōpōn ('is about to be delivered into the hands of men').

Language and setting

This is Luke's second Passion prediction, briefer than the first (9:22) and focused solely on the betrayal/delivery without mentioning death and resurrection. The emphasis on 'letting the words sink in' suggests Jesus anticipated the disciples' resistance to this message.

Voice

Jesus speaks directly and urgently to His disciples.

Significance

Jesus demanded that His disciples absorb His words deeply: the Son of Man was about to be handed over into human hands. He emphasized the need to truly hear what they desperately wanted to ignore.

In context

Luke 9:42–46

42Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.

44“Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”

45But they did not understand this statement. It was veiled from them so that they could not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

46Then an argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
