Then the disciples started arguing about which of them was the greatest. Right after Jesus talked about being betrayed, they competed for the top spot.

Why it's here

The timing could not be worse. Jesus just said He would be betrayed, and they started arguing about rank. It shows how deeply ingrained our desire for status is, and how radically Jesus challenges it.

While Jesus' words about suffering still hung in the air, the disciples launched into a debate about who among them was the greatest. The disconnect between His humility and their ambition was staggering.

The scholarly reading

A dialogismos ('argument/dispute') arose among the disciples about to tis an eiē meizōn autōn ('which of them might be the greatest'). The irony is acute: immediately after Jesus predicts His suffering, the disciples compete for status and honor.

Language and setting

The argument about greatness starkly contrasts Jesus' teaching about self-denial (9:23) and His prediction of humiliation (9:44). Luke places this episode to highlight the persistent gap between Jesus' values and the disciples' ambitions.

Significance

In a deeply ironic twist, immediately after Jesus predicted His suffering and betrayal, the disciples began arguing among themselves about which of them was the greatest. They had completely missed the point.

44“Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”

45But they did not understand this statement. It was veiled from them so that they could not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

46Then an argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.

47But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, had a little child stand beside Him.

48And He said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me. For whoever is the least among all of you, he is the greatest.”
