Why it's here

Peter wanted to capture the moment and make it permanent. We all do that sometimes: trying to bottle up a mountaintop experience. But God had something better planned than a campsite.

Where it sits in the story

Peter, overwhelmed by the experience, blurted out a plan to build shelters and stay on the mountain. He wanted to freeze this perfect moment. But the mountain was not the destination; it was preparation for the valley.

The scholarly reading

As Moses and Elijah begin diachōrizesthai ('to depart'), Peter offers to make treis skēnas ('three tabernacles/tents'), one for each figure. Luke's editorial note mē eidōs ho legei ('not knowing what he was saying') gently corrects Peter's confusion in equating Jesus with Moses and Elijah.

Language and setting

Peter's suggestion may reflect the Festival of Tabernacles (Sukkot) or a desire to prolong the glorious experience. By proposing three equal shelters, Peter inadvertently places Jesus on the same level as Moses and Elijah, a theological error the divine voice will soon correct.

Significance

As Moses and Elijah started to leave, Peter blurted out an offer to build three shelters, one for each figure, not realizing he was placing Jesus on equal footing with servants of God rather than recognizing His unique supremacy.

31They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

32Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.

33As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

35And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!”
