God literally interrupted Peter. Sometimes the best thing God can do is stop our plans so we can hear His voice. The cloud was not a weather event; it was God showing up in person.

Peter was mid-sentence when a cloud enveloped everyone. It was not an ordinary cloud; it was the presence of God Himself. The disciples were suddenly terrified, wrapped in divine mystery.

The scholarly reading

While Peter is eti speaking, a nephelē ('cloud') comes and epeskiazen ('overshadowed/enveloped') them. The disciples ephobēthēsan ('were afraid') upon entering the cloud. The overshadowing cloud is a shekinah symbol, representing the visible manifestation of God's presence.

Language and setting

The cloud of God's presence recalls the pillar of cloud in the Exodus (Exodus 13:21-22), the cloud on Sinai (Exodus 24:15-18), and the cloud filling the Tabernacle/Temple (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11). God's direct presence interrupts Peter's misguided suggestion.

33As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

35And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!”

36After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen.
