Peter and the others had been very sleepy, but when they fully woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with Him. They almost missed it.

They were so tired they almost slept through one of the most incredible moments in history. It is a reminder that sometimes God's greatest revelations come when we are barely paying attention, and we need to wake up.

The disciples almost slept through the Transfiguration. But they woke up just in time to see Jesus blazing with glory and two figures from ancient history standing right beside Him.

The scholarly reading

Peter and his companions were bebarēmenoi hypnō ('weighed down with sleep'), but diagrēgorēsantes ('having fully awakened'), they saw Jesus' doxan ('glory') and the two men standing with Him. The struggle with sleep foreshadows Gethsemane (22:45).

Language and setting

Luke's unique mention of the disciples' drowsiness creates a pattern repeated in Gethsemane, where the same three disciples will again struggle to stay awake during a crucial moment. Their awakening to glory contrasts with their later failure in the garden.

Significance

Peter, John, and James had been overcome by sleep but woke to witness the stunning scene: Jesus radiating glory with Moses and Elijah standing beside Him. They literally opened their eyes to heaven's reality.

30Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.

31They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

32Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.

33As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
