The scholarly reading

While Jesus prays, to eidos tou prosōpou autou heteron ('the appearance of His face became different') and His himatismos ('clothing') became leukos exastraptōn ('radiantly white/flashing like lightning'). Luke's description differs from Mark's 'metamorphosis,' using less technical language.

Language and setting

The radiant transformation during prayer connects divine glory with intimate communion with the Father. The shining face recalls Moses' radiance after encountering God on Sinai (Exodus 34:29-35), while Jesus' glory surpasses it as intrinsic rather than reflected.
