The scholarly reading

Meta tous logous toutous hōsei hēmerai oktō ('about eight days after these sayings'), Jesus takes Peter, John, and James up eis to oros ('onto the mountain') to proseuxasthai ('pray'). Luke's 'about eight days' versus Mark/Matthew's 'six days' may use inclusive counting or reflect a different calendrical tradition.

Language and setting

Luke uniquely specifies prayer as the purpose of the mountain ascent, consistent with his emphasis on Jesus' prayer life at pivotal moments (baptism, choosing the Twelve, Gethsemane). The mountain setting evokes Sinai/Horeb theophany traditions.

About eight days after His promises about the kingdom, Jesus took His inner three up a mountain to pray, setting the stage for the most dazzling revelation of His divine glory the disciples would ever witness.

26If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

27But I tell you truly, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

28About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray.

29And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white.

30Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.
