Suddenly andres duo ('two men'), identified as Mōusēs kai Ēlias ('Moses and Elijah'), appear synelaloun ('talking with') Jesus. Their presence represents the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah), the two major divisions of Hebrew Scripture, both pointing to and conversing with their fulfillment.

Language and setting

Moses and Elijah share unique parallels: both experienced theophanies on mountains, both had mysterious departures (Deuteronomy 34:5-6; 2 Kings 2:11), and both were expected to return in the messianic age. Their conversation with Jesus validates His ministry as the culmination of all Scripture.

Significance

Two figures from Israel's ancient past appeared alongside Jesus: Moses the lawgiver and Elijah the prophet. The Law and the Prophets stood in person with the one they had always pointed toward.

28About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray.

29And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white.

30Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.

31They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

32Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.
