They worshiped Him and went back to Jerusalem absolutely overflowing with joy.
They watched Him leave, yet they were full of joy — because they now knew the story wasn't ending. It was just beginning.
Luke describes their response: worship and joy, not grief and loss.
You'd expect sadness at a goodbye, but they were bursting with joy. When you know that Jesus is alive and His promises are true, even goodbye becomes the start of something new.
The disciples worship (Greek: proskynēsantes, 'fell down in reverence') the ascended Jesus and return to Jerusalem filled with great joy (charas megalēs).
This is the first recorded act of worship directed specifically at the risen, ascended Jesus. Their great joy contrasts sharply with the grief and confusion that opened chapter 24.
The narrator describes the disciples' worship and joyful return to Jerusalem.
The emotional arc of chapter 24 reaches its climax: from the women's bewilderment to the disciples' despair on the Emmaus road to this eruption of worship and joy.
50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
51While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53praising God continually in the temple.
