While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven. Luke 24:51 · Berean Standard Bible
While He was still blessing them, He was taken up from them into heaven.
He didn't stop blessing them before He left — He was still blessing them as He went. His blessing over your life never ends.
Luke captures the beautiful moment of Jesus' departure — ascending while still pouring out blessing.
The last thing they saw was His hands raised in blessing. He went to heaven mid-blessing, as if to say the blessing would never stop.
While in the act of blessing them, Jesus departs from them and is carried up into heaven (Greek: anephereto eis ton ouranon).
The ascension in Luke serves as the conclusion of the Gospel and will be recapitulated with additional detail in Acts 1:9-11. The continuous blessing during departure suggests an ongoing benediction.
The narrator describes Jesus' ascension while He is still in the act of blessing.
The Gospel ends as it began — in a temple context of blessing (cf. Zechariah in Luke 1). Jesus ascends while blessing, leaving His followers perpetually under His priestly benediction.
49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
51While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53praising God continually in the temple.
