Jesus led them out to the area near Bethany. There He raised His hands and blessed them.
His last earthly act wasn't a command or a correction — it was a blessing. He wanted the last thing they experienced from Him to be His love and favor.
Jesus performs His final visible act on earth: blessing His followers.
He lifted His hands — the same hands that healed, that broke bread, that bore nail scars — and He blessed them. His final gesture was one of love.
Jesus leads the disciples to the vicinity of Bethany, and there He lifts His hands and blesses them in a priestly gesture.
The raising of hands in blessing echoes the Aaronic benediction (Numbers 6:24-26) and the high priest's gesture in Sirach 50:20-21. Jesus assumes a priestly role at His departure.
