And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus told them, 'I'm going to send you what My Father promised. But stay in the city until you've been filled with power from heaven.'
Jesus didn't send them out alone or unprepared. He promised power — not their own, but from heaven. God never calls you to something without equipping you for it.
Jesus promises divine empowerment and tells them to wait for it.
He didn't say 'go figure it out.' He said 'wait — I'm sending you power.' Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is wait for God to equip you.
Jesus promises to send 'the promise of My Father' (Greek: tēn epangelian tou patros) — the Holy Spirit — and instructs them to wait in Jerusalem until they are 'clothed with power from on high' (dynamin ex hypsous).
This verse bridges Luke's Gospel to Acts, where the 'promise of the Father' is fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 1:4-5, 2:1-4). The metaphor of being 'clothed' (endysēsthe) suggests a transformative empowerment.
Jesus promises the coming of the Holy Spirit and commands the disciples to wait in Jerusalem.
The disciples are not sent out empty-handed. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead will equip them for mission — but they must wait for it.
47and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
48You are witnesses of these things.
49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
51While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
