Jesus looked at them and said, 'You are witnesses of all these things.'
He didn't call trained theologians or powerful leaders — He called ordinary people who had seen it with their own eyes. Your story matters too.
Jesus personally commissions them as His witnesses.
They weren't just bystanders who happened to be there. Jesus chose them to carry the story forward. You've been chosen to carry yours.
Jesus designates the disciples as witnesses (Greek: martyres, from which we derive 'martyr') of these redemptive events.
The term martyres carries legal weight — they are authorized eyewitnesses whose testimony constitutes evidence. In Acts, this witness function becomes the defining role of the apostles (Acts 1:8, 22).
Jesus appoints the disciples as official witnesses of His death and resurrection.
The disciples' identity is now defined by witness: they have seen, and they must testify. This calling will shape the entire trajectory of Acts and the early church.
46And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
48You are witnesses of these things.
49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
