He said that repentance and forgiveness of sins would be preached in His name to all nations, starting from Jerusalem.
This wasn't just for Israel — the message of forgiveness and new beginnings was meant for everyone, everywhere, including you.
Jesus gives His followers their mission: bring this message to the whole world.
From one city to every corner of the earth — that's the scope of what Jesus started. And it all began with a handful of people who had just discovered He was alive.
Jesus commissions the proclamation of repentance (Greek: metanoia, 'change of mind/heart') and forgiveness of sins to all nations (panta ta ethnē), beginning from Jerusalem.
This verse is Luke's version of the Great Commission. The phrase 'beginning from Jerusalem' establishes the geographic and theological starting point that will be realized in Acts 1:8.
Jesus outlines the mission of the church: preaching repentance and forgiveness to all nations.
The resurrection is not merely a personal vindication but launches a universal mission. The good news that began in Jerusalem must reach every nation — a program Luke will narrate in Acts.
45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
46And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
48You are witnesses of these things.
49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
