The scholarly reading

Two heteroi kakourgoi (other criminals) are led with Jesus to execution. Luke's Greek phrasing — heteroi kakourgoi duo (other criminals, two) — could ambiguously imply Jesus is a criminal too, though the context clearly distinguishes Him.

Language and setting

The crucifixion of Jesus between two criminals fulfills Isaiah 53:12 — 'He was numbered with the transgressors' — the very passage Jesus quoted at the Last Supper (Luke 22:37).
