Jesus uses a proverbial saying: 'ei en tō hygrō xylō tauta poiousin, en tō xērō ti genētai?' (If they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?). Green wood represents the present time of grace; dry wood, the coming judgment.

Language and setting

The proverb has multiple interpretive layers: if the Romans do this to an innocent man (green wood), what will they do to a guilty nation (dry wood)? If this happens during the time of God's favor, what will the time of judgment bring?

Jesus speaks in proverbial wisdom, using a vivid metaphor to warn that if innocent suffering is this terrible, guilty suffering will be incomparably worse.

Significance

Jesus' final prophetic word on the road to Calvary is a proverb of escalation. If this is what happens to the innocent (green, living wood), imagine what awaits the guilty (dry, dead wood). If Rome crucifies a righteous man, what will it do to a rebellious city?

29Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’

32Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus.
