Jesus will be a light that reveals God to all the nations of the world, and He will be the pride and glory of God's people Israel.
This is remarkable: Simeon says Jesus came for the whole world, not just Israel. He is a light for everyone, and the fulfillment of Israel's greatest hope.
Simeon describes the twofold mission of the baby in his arms.
A light for the whole world and glory for Israel—that is who this baby will become. Simeon sees it all in that tiny face: hope for every person who has ever lived in darkness.
Jesus will be a light (phōs) for revelation (apokalypsin) to the Gentiles (ethnōn) and glory (doxan) for Israel (Israēl). The dual purpose fulfills Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6.
Placing Gentiles before Israel is significant and potentially shocking to Jewish listeners. Simeon envisions the Messiah as both Israel's glory and the world's illumination.
Simeon concludes the Nunc Dimittis with its universal vision.
Simeon sees two dimensions of Jesus' mission: bringing light to nations that sit in spiritual darkness, and bringing glory to Israel through the fulfillment of her deepest calling.
