Simeon says, 'My eyes have actually seen Your salvation'—holding a tiny baby, he sees the rescue of the whole world.
Simeon doesn't just see a baby. He sees everything God has been planning since the beginning—rescue, redemption, hope—wrapped in an infant's form.
Simeon testifies to what the Holy Spirit has revealed to him about this child.
What does salvation look like? According to Simeon, it looks like a baby in your arms. In this one small life, all of God's saving purposes are wrapped up.
Simeon declares his eyes have seen God's salvation (to sōtērion sou). The neuter sōtērion ('salvation') encompasses the full saving work that the child Jesus will accomplish.
The language echoes Isaiah 40:5 ('all flesh shall see the salvation of God'). Simeon sees in this infant the embodiment of everything God promised to do for His people.
Simeon continues his prayer, testifying to what he has witnessed.
Simeon's physical eyes behold a baby, but his spiritual eyes see God's entire salvation plan embodied in this tiny child. The promise has become a person.
28Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying:
29“Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You now dismiss Your servant in peace.
30For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
31which You have prepared in the sight of all people,
32a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”
