The ruler confidently says he's kept all these commandments since he was young. And he probably has! But keeping rules and surrendering your heart are two very different things.

This man isn't lying or bragging — he's genuinely lived a moral life. But Jesus is about to show him the gap between being good and being fully devoted.

The ruler responds honestly, believing he's met God's standard. He's about to learn otherwise.

Where it sits in the story

He's done everything right on paper. Every commandment, checked. But deep down, something is still holding him back from the life he's asking about — and Jesus knows exactly what it is.

The scholarly reading

The ruler claims lifelong observance (ek neotētos, 'from youth') of these commandments. His response is sincere but reveals a righteousness based on external compliance without recognizing deeper spiritual need.

Language and setting

Claiming Torah observance from youth was not unusual for devout Jews. Paul made a similar claim (Philippians 3:6). The ruler's confidence sets up the dramatic reversal in Jesus' next demand.

The ruler responds to Jesus with confidence, affirming his moral track record since childhood.

Significance

The ruler passes the test — or thinks he does. He has genuinely kept these commands his whole life. But Jesus is about to reveal that checking every box still isn't enough.

19“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.

20You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.’”

21“All these I have kept from my youth,” he said.

22On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”

23But when the ruler heard this, he became very sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
