The scholarly reading

Jesus recites commandments from the second table of the Decalogue (Exodus 20:12-16), focused on interpersonal ethics. The selection tests the ruler's moral self-assessment and sets up the deeper challenge to follow.

Language and setting

Notably absent are commands about loving God (the first table), coveting, and the Sabbath. The omission of coveting is strategic, as it will become the crux of the ruler's failure in verse 22.

Voice

Jesus quotes specific commandments to the ruler, beginning with prohibitions against adultery, murder, theft, false witness, and the positive command to honor parents.

Significance

Jesus starts with the commands the ruler would feel confident about — the outward, measurable ones. It's a setup: the ruler will pass this test easily, which makes the real test hit harder.

19“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.

22On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
