Jesus identifies the 'one thing' (hen) the ruler lacks: radical divestiture of wealth, distribution to the poor, and discipleship. 'Treasure in heaven' (thēsauron en ouranō) contrasts earthly with eternal investment.

The command to sell everything is not a universal requirement but a targeted diagnosis of this man's particular idol. Where the commandments failed to convict him, Jesus exposes the grip of mammon on his heart.
