Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. Luke 1:31 · Berean Standard Bible
The angel tells Mary, 'You are going to become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name Him Jesus.'
The name Jesus means 'God saves.' His very name is a mission statement. Every time someone calls His name, they're declaring what He came to do.
Gabriel reveals the most important announcement in history.
A teenage girl in a tiny town hears words that will change the course of human history. She will carry the Son of God, and His name will mean salvation.
Gabriel announces that Mary will syllēmpse en gastri (conceive in her womb) and bear a huion (son) to be named Iesous (Jesus/Yeshua, meaning 'the Lord saves').
The announcement closely parallels Isaiah 7:14 LXX. The name Iesous (Hebrew: Yeshua/Joshua) means 'YHWH saves,' programmatically declaring the child's identity and mission.
Gabriel delivers the core of the annunciation to Mary.
The central announcement names both the event (miraculous conception) and the child (Jesus). The name itself is a theological statement: God Himself is coming to save.
29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
30So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.
32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”
