The Woman at the Well
“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” John 4:50 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus says, 'Go. Your son will live.' And the man took Jesus at His word and left. No proof, no miracles to see. Just trust in what Jesus said.
This is a massive step of faith. The official had begged Jesus to come in person, but instead he received just a sentence. And he believed it.
Jesus speaks with authority that requires no physical presence, and the official responds with the kind of faith that takes God at His word.
There is something powerful about this moment. A father walks away from Jesus with nothing but a promise. No evidence. No proof. Just a word. And he trusts it enough to walk sixteen miles home.
Jesus' command 'Go' (poreuou) and declaration 'Your son will live' (ho huios sou zē) require the official to trust Jesus' word without seeing proof. The man's response (episteusen, aorist, decisive act) represents a crucial transition from sign-faith to word-faith.
The official must walk sixteen miles home believing his son is healed based solely on Jesus' spoken word. This is the precise faith Jesus called for in verse 48: belief without visible signs.
Jesus speaks a word of healing and the official believes it, departing without any visible confirmation that his son has been healed.
Jesus does not go to Capernaum. Instead, He speaks a word. The official takes that word and begins the long walk home, trusting that what Jesus said is true. This is the faith Jesus has been looking for: trust in His word alone.
48Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
49“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
50“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”
51And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
52So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
