The elder daughter of Laban and first wife of Jacob, given to him through Laban’s deception on the wedding night. Though ‘unloved’ compared to her sister Rachel, God opened Leah’s womb and she bore six of Jacob’s twelve sons—including Judah, through whom the messianic line would continue, and Levi, from whom the priesthood descended. Leah’s life is a poignant story of a woman finding her worth in God’s purposes rather than in human affection.

The deceiver gets deceived. Jacob works seven years for Rachel, wakes up married to Leah, and learns what it feels like to be tricked.
And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob. Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar. Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob. “God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him Zebulun. After that, Leah gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
Children born in rivalry and heartbreak. But these names — Reuben, Judah, Joseph — will become the twelve tribes of a nation.
