New Testament · In the line to Jesus

Joseph

A righteous descendant of King David who served as the earthly father and legal guardian of Jesus. When he discovered Mary was pregnant before their marriage, Joseph planned to divorce her quietly until an angel appeared in a dream confirming the child was from the Holy Spirit. He obediently took Mary as his wife, protected the infant Jesus by fleeing to Egypt, and raised him as a carpenter in Nazareth. Though largely silent in Scripture, Joseph’s obedience and protective love provided the family context for the Son of God’s upbringing.
