Matthew 1:16, in plain English

Notice the change in language here. Matthew doesn't say Joseph 'fathered' Jesus. He says Jesus was born 'of Mary.' This is the gentle hint that something miraculous is about to be explained.

Why it's here

Joseph gave Jesus his legal family name and royal lineage. Mary gave Him birth. Together, they fulfilled what the law and the promise required.

The scholarly reading

The genealogy climaxes with a crucial grammatical shift: Joseph is not called the 'father' of Jesus but the 'husband of Mary, of whom (feminine singular, ex hes) was born Jesus.' This carefully preserves the virgin birth while establishing legal Davidic descent through Joseph.

Language and setting

In Jewish law, legal paternity established inheritance rights and tribal membership. Joseph's marriage to Mary gave Jesus legal standing as David's heir without claiming biological paternity.

The entire 42-generation genealogy converges on this point: Jesus, called Christos (the Anointed One), is the promised Messiah.

16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
