Son of Obed and father of King David, a sheep farmer from Bethlehem. Jesse had eight sons, of whom David was the youngest and most unlikely candidate for kingship. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint a new king, Jesse did not even bother to bring David in from the fields. Isaiah’s prophecy of a ‘shoot from the stump of Jesse’ became a powerful messianic image, pointing to Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic promise.
