The God of Vengeance

When the psalmist feels like he's falling apart—losing his footing—God's loving devotion catches him and holds him up.
"My foot is slipping" is the language of someone losing stability, falling into despair. And in that moment, God's faithful love (hesed in Hebrew—that deep, covenantal love) becomes the solid ground under his feet.

The image of the 'foot slipping' (רַגְלִי מִשְׁמָטוּ, ragli mishmatu) represents loss of moral or spiritual equilibrium. The response—'Your loving devotion' (חַסְדְּךָ, chasdeka)—invokes חֶסֶד (chesed), that untranslatable term meaning covenant love, loyalty, and mercy. Medieval commentators like David Kimchi understood this as the steadfast character by which God maintains relationship even when humans fail. The verb 'supports' (תִּסְמְכֵנִי, tismenkai) means literally 'to hold upright,' suggesting physical stabilization of one who is falling.
The psalmist testifies to personal experience of God's constancy in moments of spiritual crisis.
This creates a theological foundation for understanding how God maintains the righteous through affliction—they are held not by their own strength but by divine loyalty. It anticipates the New Testament teaching that nothing can separate us from God's love (Romans 8:38-39).
