When anxiety overwhelms him, God's comfort and consolation become a source of joy and relief to his soul.
You can be facing real, legitimate pressure and anxiety, and simultaneously experience God's comfort. These aren't contradictory—the comfort is real even if the pressure is real. God meets you in the anxiety itself.

This anticipates Jesus' words: "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." The comfort of God is one of Scripture's greatest themes because human anxiety is universal.
In the midst of overwhelming anxiety, God's consolation brings not merely relief but genuine delight to the soul.
The Hebrew רְבוּת (rebut, 'abundance' or 'multitude') describes anxiety as something pressing in from all sides. 'Your consolation' (תַּנְחוּמֶיךָ, tanhumeika) employs the root נִחַם (nicham), which carries connotations of comfort through presence and empathy. The phrase 'delights my soul' (יְשַׁעְשַׁע נַפְשִׁי, yeshashea nafshi) uses a verb suggesting play, pleasure, and satisfaction—remarkably, joy coexists with anxiety rather than replacing it. This is not denial of suffering but its transformation through divine presence.
The psalmist continues testifying, now emphasizing the qualitative transformation that divine comfort produces.
This reflects Isaiah's proclamation of comfort to the exiles (Isaiah 40:1) and anticipates Jesus's promise of divine consolation in Matthew 5:4 ('Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted').
