The God of Vengeance

Without God's help, he would have already been destroyed—God's presence and aid have been the only thing keeping him alive and sane.
This is personal testimony. The psalmist is saying, "I know I'm still here because God helped me. My survival is proof of God's care, even when I've felt abandoned."

This connects to the psalms of deliverance, where people testify that God has saved them in ways they didn't always recognize while it was happening. Trust grows through remembering God's faithfulness.

The phrase 'unless the LORD had been my helper' (לוּלֵי יְהוָה עֶזְרָתִי, lule YHWH ezrati) is a counterfactual expressing utter dependence. The consequence—'I would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence' (כִּמְעַט שָׁכְנָה דוּמָה נַפְשִׁי, kimat shakhna duma nafshi)—employs דּוּמָה (duma, silence), a poetic term for Sheol, the realm of the dead. The ancient Israelites understood Sheol not as hell but as the land of forgetfulness where God seems absent (Psalm 88:12). This is not rhetorical exaggeration but genuine testimony to deliverance from what seemed like certain death.
The psalmist now testifies personally to God's rescue, moving from question to confession.
This echoes the language of deliverance psalms like Psalm 30 and 116, and exemplifies the testimony form that runs through biblical narrative—'the LORD brought me up from the pit.'
