The scholarly reading

The sheep are placed on the right (dexiōn) — the position of honor and favor — while the goats are placed on the left (euōnymōn) — the position of disfavor. In ancient Near Eastern court protocol, the right side of the king was the place of highest honor.

Language and setting

The right-hand position connects to Psalm 110:1 ('Sit at My right hand'), where the Son of Man Himself sat. Now He places His people in the position of honor He Himself occupies.
