All nations (panta ta ethnē) are gathered before the throne for judgment. The Son of Man separates people 'as a shepherd separates sheep from goats' (aphorizei ta probata apo tōn eriphōn). In Palestine, sheep and goats grazed together by day but were separated at night, as goats required warmer shelter.

Language and setting

The shepherd metaphor connects to Ezekiel 34, where God promises to judge between sheep. The universal scope — 'all nations' — extends judgment beyond Israel to every people group in history.
