The scholarly reading

Jesus transitions to the final judgment scene: the Son of Man comes 'in His glory' (en tē doxē autou) with 'all the angels' (pantes hoi angeloi), sitting upon 'His glorious throne' (thronou doxēs autou). This combines Daniel 7:13-14's Son of Man vision with the enthronement imagery of Psalm 110 and Joel 3:2's gathering of nations for judgment.

Language and setting

This is the climactic scene of the Olivet Discourse and indeed of Jesus' entire teaching ministry in Matthew. It moves beyond parables to direct revelation of the final judgment.
