Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed Peter. He didn't let him go under. Then He gently asked, 'Why did you doubt?' Rescue came before the lesson.
Notice that Jesus caught Peter first and asked questions later. He won't let you drown while He lectures you. His first instinct is to save.
Jesus speaks to Peter while pulling him from the water.
In this moment, you see the heart of Jesus: instant rescue, then gentle correction. He doesn't abandon Peter for failing; He holds him closer.
Jesus' immediate response (eutheōs ekteinas tēn cheira, 'immediately stretching out His hand') demonstrates that rescue precedes rebuke. The address oligopiste ('O you of little faith') and eis ti edistasas ('why did you doubt') combine grace with correction.
The verb distazō ('doubt/hesitate') appears only twice in the NT, both in Matthew (here and 28:17). It denotes wavering between two positions rather than outright unbelief.
Jesus speaks to Peter as He reaches out and catches him.
Jesus saves first and questions second. His hand reaches Peter before His words reach Peter's ears. Grace precedes instruction.
29“Come,” said Jesus.
30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
32And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down.
33Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”
