Beyond the Boundaries
After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable. Mark 7:17 · Berean Standard Bible
Later, when they were inside a house away from the crowd, the disciples asked Jesus to explain what he meant.
The disciples heard Jesus' teaching but didn't fully grasp it. So they asked — which is always the right response when you don't understand something.
Mark describes the disciples seeking a private explanation from Jesus.
Behind closed doors, the disciples admit they don't fully get it. At least they ask. Understanding starts with acknowledging what you don't know.
After leaving the crowd and entering a house (eis oikon), the disciples ask about 'the parable' (ten parabolen) — indicating they understood Jesus' public teaching as a riddle requiring private interpretation, consistent with Mark's two-level teaching pattern (cf. 4:10, 34).
The house setting for private teaching is characteristic of Mark (cf. 7:24; 9:28, 33; 10:10). The disciples' need for explanation continues their pattern of incomprehension in this gospel.

18“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him,
19because it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)
