“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him, Mark 7:18 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus seems surprised: 'Don't you get it either? Nothing that enters you from the outside can make you unclean.'
Even the disciples struggled with this teaching. It was so counter to everything they'd been raised to believe. But Jesus patiently walks them through it.
Jesus responds to his disciples' confusion with further explanation.
Jesus is patient but clearly wants them to catch up. This isn't complicated, he implies — food goes in and comes out. It doesn't touch your heart.
Jesus' somewhat exasperated response — 'Are you still so dull?' (houtos kai hymeis asynеtoi este) — expresses frustration at the disciples' ongoing incomprehension. He then repeats and expands his principle: nothing external entering a person can produce moral defilement.
The word asynetoi ('without understanding') echoes the same root as the command to 'understand' (synete) in v.14, highlighting the irony that the disciples fail at the very thing Jesus urged.
Jesus responds to his disciples with frustration and further explanation.
Jesus' exasperation is palpable: even his inner circle doesn't get it. He patiently explains again that external things — food entering the body — cannot produce moral or spiritual defilement.
17After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.
18“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him,
19because it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)
20He continued: “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him.
