Jesus makes a statement that changes everything: 'Nothing that goes into you from the outside can make you unclean. It's what comes out of you — from your heart — that defiles you.'
This turns the whole purity system upside down. It's not about what you eat or whether you washed your hands. It's about what's inside your heart.
Jesus teaches the crowd a revolutionary principle about purity.
This is one of the most radical things Jesus ever said. The entire religious system was built on external purity — what you eat, what you touch. Jesus says: look at your heart instead.
Jesus' revolutionary declaration — 'Nothing entering a man from outside can defile him; but what comes out of a man defiles him' — relocates defilement from the external/ritual to the internal/moral sphere. This effectively abolishes the Levitical food purity system.
This principle has enormous theological implications: it overturns the ceremonial distinction between clean and unclean foods (Lev 11) and shifts the locus of purity from dietary practice to moral character.
Jesus delivers a radical teaching on the nature of true defilement.
In one sentence, Jesus overturns the entire external purity system: nothing you eat defiles you; only what comes from your heart can make you unclean. This is revolutionary.
13Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”
14Once again Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “All of you, listen to Me and understand:
