The scholarly reading

James and John (dubbed 'Sons of Thunder' in Mark 3:17) ask if Jesus wants them to command pyr katabēnai apo tou ouranou ('fire to come down from heaven') to analōsai ('consume/destroy') the Samaritans. This alludes to Elijah's calling down fire in 2 Kings 1:10-12, particularly significant since Elijah's ministry was near this region.

Language and setting

The disciples' suggestion reveals a misunderstanding of Jesus' mission, applying Elijah-like judgment to a situation calling for grace. Given that they just witnessed the Transfiguration with Elijah present, they may have felt empowered to imitate his more dramatic acts.
