The Samaritans ouk edexanto ('did not receive/welcome') Jesus because to prosōpon autou ēn poreuomenon eis Ierousalēm ('His face was set toward Jerusalem'). The rejection was not personal but theological: Samaritans worshiped on Mount Gerizim and opposed Jerusalem-centered worship.

Language and setting

The Samaritan-Jewish schism centered on the proper location of worship (cf. John 4:20). A Jewish teacher deliberately heading to the Jerusalem temple would be seen as a theological affront to Samaritan sensibilities.
