Where it sits in the story

Jesus knew exactly where the road to Jerusalem led: betrayal, suffering, and death. And He set His face toward it with unshakable resolve. The cross was a choice, not an accident.

The scholarly reading

As the hēmerai tēs analēmpseōs ('days of His ascension/taking up') approached, Jesus estērisen to prosōpon ('set His face resolutely') toward Jerusalem. The term analēmpsis encompasses His death, resurrection, and ascension as one unified event of departure.

Language and setting

This verse initiates Luke's famous Travel Narrative (9:51-19:27), the lengthy central section unique to Luke. The resolute face-setting echoes Isaiah 50:7 (the Servant's determination) and marks the decisive turn toward the cross.
