Jesus said, 'Do not stop him. Whoever is not against you is for you.' The kingdom is bigger than your group.

Jesus expanded their thinking. You do not have to be in the same group to be on the same team. God works through people and places you might not expect. Be slow to exclude and quick to welcome.

The scholarly reading

Jesus commands mē kōlyete ('do not stop him') with the principle hos gar ouk estin kath' hymōn hyper hymōn estin ('whoever is not against you is for you'). This inclusive maxim complements but does not contradict the exclusive formulation in Luke 11:23.

Language and setting

The two sayings (9:50 'not against you is for you' and 11:23 'not with Me is against Me') address different situations: 9:50 addresses friendly outsiders doing good, while 11:23 addresses neutrality toward Jesus Himself. Context determines which principle applies.
