Jesus extends the cross-bearing call to pantas ('all'), requiring arnēsasthō heauton ('deny himself'), aratō ton stauron autou kath' hēmeran ('take up his cross daily'), and akoloutheitō moi ('follow Me'). Luke uniquely adds kath' hēmeran ('daily'), transforming a single act into ongoing spiritual discipline.

Language and setting

The cross was not yet a religious symbol but a Roman instrument of execution, making this metaphor shockingly vivid. Luke's addition of 'daily' domesticates the image from martyrdom to daily self-denial, applicable to every believer's ordinary life.
