Right after 'You are the Christ' came 'I must suffer and die.' Jesus connected His identity to His sacrifice. The Messiah would save, but not the way anyone expected.

Jesus' first Passion prediction outlines four elements: pathein polla ('suffer many things'), apodokimasthēnai ('be rejected') by the religious leadership (elders, chief priests, scribes), apoktanthēnai ('be killed'), and tē tritē hēmera egerthēnai ('on the third day be raised'). The dei ('must') indicates divine necessity.

This is the first of three Passion predictions in Luke (9:22, 9:44, 18:31-33). The 'must' (dei) reflects Luke's theology of divine plan and fulfillment. The three groups mentioned, elders, chief priests, and scribes, constitute the Sanhedrin.
