The scholarly reading

The crowds discover Jesus' location and follow Him. Rather than expressing frustration, Jesus apodexamenos ('welcomed') them and continued lalein ('speaking') about the kingdom and iato ('healing') those chreia echontas therapeias ('who had need of healing').

Language and setting

Jesus' compassionate response to the intrusion upon His rest demonstrates His shepherd-like character (cf. Mark 6:34). The triad of welcome, teaching, and healing encapsulates His entire ministry approach.

Significance

The planned retreat was interrupted when crowds tracked Jesus down. Instead of turning them away, He welcomed them warmly, taught about God's kingdom, and healed everyone who needed it.

9“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this man I hear such things about?” And he kept trying to see Jesus.

10Then the apostles returned and reported to Jesus all that they had done. Taking them away privately, He withdrew to a town called Bethsaida.

11But the crowds found out and followed Him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and He healed those who needed healing.

12As the day neared its end, the Twelve came to Jesus and said, “Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside for lodging and provisions. For we are in a desolate place here.”

13But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.”
