The apostoloi ('apostles') return and diēgēsanto ('reported') their mission activities. Jesus withdraws them kat' idian ('privately') to Bēthsaida ('Bethsaida'), a town on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, for rest and debriefing.

Language and setting

The apostles' return creates a narrative bracket around the Herod interlude. Bethsaida, hometown of Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44), provides a familiar retreat. The private withdrawal signals the need for rest after intensive ministry.
